WHAT IS THE JUMP CITY URBAN CHALLENGE?

The Jump City Challenge is South Africa's inner city obstacle race, which takes you on an adrenaline pumping obstacle packed course through the inner city and other iconic landmarks in the area. We don't just run you to or around them, we take you through, over and inside actual buildings, museums, office parks, stadiums and just about anything we can think of.

For participants this is a speed tour offering you a glimpse of your city made even more exciting by the unique way in which we take you through the route, it is a rare opportunity to behave like a child  and take to parts of Gold Reef City you always dreamed you could.

Each event features no less than 24 built obstacles designed for all levels of athletes, this excludes the urban landscape which we make full use of in this event. How hard is it? Well, we don't set out to hurt you, but as with anything in life it is relevant to the effort you put in.

WHAT FEATURES ON THE ROUTE?

The run route is brain child of 6 years of continual experimentation and pushing the limits of our great city. Athletes taking part in 2017 will enjoy the following as part of the route:-

1. Number & T-Shirt collection
Number collection will happen at the entrance to Gold Reef City Theme Park. There will be separate stations for teams and individuals to move things along smoothly. Please do not print anything, save the trees as we have all your details already. If you have ordered a t-shirt it will be available for your collection there. There will also be a limited amount of T-Shirts available for purchase on the night at R100. Spectators are welcome to join, there will be a fee of R20 for them to access the theme park on the night. *Please note, we do not have card machines available.

  • Yes, you can collect a friends number for them.

  • No, you do not need to print your proof of registration.

  • You will not be permitted into the start batch without a wrist band.

  • Arrive 45 minutes prior to your start. Please, stick to this to avoid bottle necks at registration. Ie. If you are going off at 7, only collect your number at 18:15.

  • Registration opens from 17:00.

2. Start times and batches
You have registered for the <<Start Batch>>. Please note, we cannot change this and we can no longer facilitate substitutions. You have to run with the batch you have entered into. The course is designed to take a certain amount of traffic, any changes to the batches can severely affect the flow on route and cause bottle necking.  If we find you swapping batches, your number will be removed and you will be barred from the race.

3. Substitutions
Substitutions have closed for the event. All data is now being prepped with timing to receive you on Friday, we unfortunately cannot change it as you have agreed to our terms when registering. This is for your safety.
Why can somebody not run under your name? When you register for the race, you fall into our race liability and we can take care of you if medical assistance is needed. If you run under alias, by law no assistance can be provided. It is not a risk we and our partners are willing to take.

4. What to wear & bag drop
You may be getting wet, please do not wear any electronic devices (barring a headlamp). No inner ear music devices will be permitted.
Wear something you are comfortable crawling and climbing in. We do have a secure bag drop available for you at R20 per bag.

  • We do strongly advise that you wear headlamps as it is dark out there and all our signage is reflective. We have literally stood right next to athletes asking where to go when the sign is right next them.

  • Bring something warm and dry for after the run, you can always leave it at the bag drop.

 5. Where to park
The easiest and closest parking is through the Gold Reef City Theme Park Gates.

7. Race photos

This year all proceeds from race images are going towards NSRI. You will be able to buy your race images for R28 on a link we send you. Please support NSRI and purchase your pic if you like it, R28 is not a big amount. We always have athletes emailing us within half a day of the race wanting to see images, being a night race it takes a little longer to edit.  Please allow the photographers up to 10 working days to edit the images. We will email all runners the moment the pics are available. 50 featured images will be posted with partner branding on facebook.
Please chat to the crew at briefing about branding of your race number so the cameras can pick it up in the dark. The option to write your race number on your arm for extra visibility will also be available. Unfortunately the use of bibs wont work as they often come off when running and climbing.

8. Route and Obstacles

This route will be the most exhilarating of all the Gold Reef events to date. There is no shortage of entertainment and action to be had out there along with a few scares too. Here are a few of the featured points and obstacles to look forward to:-

  • The slanted cat, previously known as a pole cat. This challenge is 8m long, you will traverse poles in a planking position, as you proceed the incline will change. Your hands or feet will end up higher than the other as you shuffle across.

  • Inclined monkey bars.

  • Table top. Climbing walls are easy because you get to use your feet. At the table top, there is no such joy as you need to propel yourself up with a jump to get up the to the 2m height.

  • Knife throw. The knives are small and light and really hard to peg. You will need to keep your fine motor skills about you to land one of the 3 shots you need to get to avoid the penalty.

  • Paint ball. Here you also need to hit 3 targets at speed to avoid the forfeit penalty.

  • Soweto Touch Rugby Bootcamp.

  • Jozi X mobile, a 75m long inflatable boot camp.

  • Apartheid Museum, 2km inside the iconic museum. This alone is a world class experience, in a world class facility.

What if you cannot get through a challenge?
1st of all, every critical obstacle has a marshal stationed at and all obstacles have instructions. Critical obstacles also come with forfeits if you cannot do them. Very often the forfeit is tougher than the obstacle itself. Please consider other athletes, if you cannot finish a challenge on the 1st attempt kindly step back for others to use it.
The very nature of obstacle racing carries with it certain risks. Use the obstacles in the correct manner and you will be fine.

9. Route directions and signage
The route is marked with over 150 signs on it. They are white boards with red arrows, they reflect when a light hits them. That is why we strongly advise the use of a headlamp. Each arrow will point towards where the next is, if you follow this concept you will not get lost. Do not run in the road, stick to the pavement at all times and only cross where there is an official crossing. Never cross the danger tape, it is there as a barrier not the finish line.

10. Finishers medals
These medals are a very different to what we have done in the past. It is significantly bigger with a piece missing. We are trying something new with this medal forming part of a series that combine to make one that reflects the elements of your city coming together. Every finisher will be receiving a medal at the finish line.

11. Spectators

Spectators are welcome, there are ample points for them on route. There is an access fee of R20 per spectator to enter the theme park. This is a security and safety measure as we do not want just anybody walking into the theme park.

12. Entertainment, food and drinks on the night

We will have entertainment, food and drinks available on the night of the race. You can kick back and enjoy the majestic looping skills of Jaryd Smith while swapping a story with a fellow runner.

Best of luck with the run, it is going to be a blast.

See you Friday.
